Welcome to the School of Management Career Center! The Center opened in January 2019 and offers undergraduate and graduate students and alumni an array of programs and services to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market.

The Center is committed to providing resources for career exploration, networking, job search guidance, internship application, and interview skills. Career management should occur throughout the curriculum, and the Center offers a variety of services specifically designed to help students stand out from the competition.

At Marist, we measure student success by more than just grades: We help our students fully develop their intellect, character and social skills. The School of Management’s dedicated Career Center provides all the tools needed to succeed in the increasingly competitive job market: help with resume writing and interviewing skills, internship placements, career fairs, and career management within the curriculum. When interviewed six months after earning their diplomas, 98 percent of 2017 School of Management graduates confirmed that they were employed, continuing their education in a graduate program, or both.

From banking and accounting to entertainment and social media, School of Management graduates have landed positions at many of the nation’s premier companies.

Internships

An internship is an ideal way for students to hone their skills while they gain real-world business experience and build connections to reputable employers. Marist School of Management students have completed internships with companies such as American Express, Merrill Lynch, IBM, PepsiCo, and many other national companies. In addition, our extensive Alumni Network offers access to Marist graduates who are enthusiastic about providing solid advice on business, nonprofit management, or public service careers.

Our unique location, which is close to Manhattan and Wall Street, is just a 90-minute train ride away. This proximity helps students to connect with employers through events like our New York City Career Trek and other networking opportunities in the heart of New York’s business district.

New York City Career Trek

Image of students on Career TrekThe New York City Career Trek for undergraduate students provides students with knowledge of companies and career choices in their field of study.  Alumni, parents, or friends of the Marist School of Management host the students at the participating companies.  In fall 2017, over 140 students visited companies in New York City and learned about internships and job opportunities. Since its inception in 2014, students who participated in the Career Trek have received and accepted offers in internships and permanent job opportunities from participating companies.

In addition to visiting companies, students participate in a networking event in the evening.  This provides them the opportunity to enhance their interpersonal skills in meeting and introducing themselves to strangers and selling themselves in a friendly, professional, and non-threatening environment.  Alumni, faculty, staff, and friends of Marist are also invited and attend.   Alumni understand the purpose of the networking event is to assist students in finding internships and jobs opportunities.

When applying for internships, Tom recommends:

  • Identify skills and interests before applying to a role.  Research the company and leverage your network to enhance your candidate profile.
  • If you apply for a role in financial services and do not have a “traditional” finance background, be sure to research the role and study the technical responsibilities.  Leverage your network to learn more about the day-to-day work and company culture.
  • When applying to an internship or full-time role, be sure to highlight all relevant experiences.  While employers care about your previous work experience, they are also interested in your involvement on-campus, relevant coursework, and additional leadership opportunities.

Meet the Staff

Dr. Pamela J. Harper

Photo of Dr. Pamela HarperDr. Pamela J. Harper is an Associate Professor in Marist’s School of Management. She holds a PhD in Business Strategy from the Lally School of Management and Technology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York and BS in Industrial Management from Purdue University, W. Lafayette, Indiana. Prior to pursuing her PhD, she spent 11 years with General Electric on the renowned Corporate Audit Staff in various consulting assignments in the US, Europe, and Asia and thereafter in management positions in Six Sigma Quality, Marketing/Sales, and eBusiness. She also has employment experience with Eli Lilly, Procter & Gamble, and NCR Corporation.

Dr. Harper’s experience includes both the for-profit and not-for-profit business sectors. She has served on the Board of Directors for a number of non-profits, including Vice Chair of the Board of Directors for Albany County Land Bank Corporation.

Dr. Harper’s research has been published in peer-reviewed academic journals, and she has presented at such international conferences as the Annual Meeting of the Academy of Management, the Annual American Marketing Association (AMA) Marketing Educators’ Conference, The Northeast Decision Sciences Institute (DSI), the International Conference on Intellectual Capital, Knowledge Management and Organizational Learning (ICICKM), and the International Conference on Sport & Society.

Ms. Erin McGuinness

Photo of Erin McGuinnessMs. Erin McGuinness, Benefits Manager in the Office of Human Resources, is an experienced human resources (HR) professional and adjunct instructor in the School of Management (SoM) at Marist College. She will serve as an Internship Coordinator in the Marist SoM Career Center this fall, which includes internship and career advising.

In her HR role, Ms. McGuiness has supported a variety of employee groups including union members, sales teams, operations, faculty, administration, retirees, and executive leadership. In addition, Ms. McGuinness is skilled in project management and strategic communication. She is a subject matter expert in employee benefits administration and compliance and serves as Director of Certification for the Mid-Hudson Human Resources Association.

As a small-business manager and former business development manager, Ms. McGuinness has developed valuable insights about business, from entrepreneurial start-ups to global organizations, and the strategic role of HR as an alliance partner. Her vast experience and diverse background have facilitated meaningful classroom discussions with her students in the School of Management and the School of Professional Programs at Marist College where she has been teaching part-time since 2015.

Ms. McGuinness holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Montclair State University, and a Master’s degree in Communication from Marist College. She has also earned two certifications in the HR field: the Professional in Human Resources Certification (PHR) from the Human Resources Certification Institute and the Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) from the Society for Human Resource Management Certification.

Mr. Joseph Porter, Jr.

Photo of Joseph PorterJoseph Porter, Jr. will be joining Marist as a Visiting Assistant Professor of Management in the School of Management (SoM). In addition, he will serve as an Internship Coordinator for the SoM Career Center, which includes advising and registering students for internships. Mr. Porter has been an Adjunct Professor at Marist since 2015 and has taught undergraduate courses in the SoM and undergraduate and graduate courses in the Computer Science and Mathematics department.

Mr. Porter retired from IBM in 2018 after 26 years of service in management and IT leadership roles. He is Project Management Institute (PMI) certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) and obtained project management and consultancy certifications while at IBM.

In addition to his professional achievements, Mr. Porter has a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) from Cornell, a Master of Science in Engineering (MSE) from University of Pennsylvania (sponsored by Wharton Business School & Penn Engineering) and a Bachelor of Arts (BA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from State University of New York at Binghamton. Mr. Porter is currently finishing his doctoral studies at Pace University.

Dr. Tony Carrizales, MPA Internship Coordinator

Dr. Carrizales joined the Marist faculty in 2006 and has taught mainly in the graduate program of the School of Management. His course teaching has primarily centered on the areas of administrative law and public policy. His research has covered areas of technology management and diversity in the public sector.
