Pablo Rivas

Assistant Professor of Computer Science


Dr. Rivas worked in industry for a decade as a software engineer before becoming an academic. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE, ACM, and SIAM. He was formerly at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, and at Baylor University performing post-doctoral research and teaching. He considers himself a deep learning evangelist, machine learning ethicist, and is a proponent of the democratization of machine learning and artificial intelligence in general. He is also an ally of women in computing and co-chairs the ACM New York Celebration of Women in Computing conference. He is a faculty advisor of the Marist Computer society and of the Marist Women in STEM club.

Dr. Rivas recently became a certified online instructor and currently serves as the chair of the of the Online and Distance Education Committee; he is the International Internship Coordinator of the Department of Computing Technology; and he is a machine learning consultant of Marist’s Cloud Computing and Analytics Center. Prof. Rivas prefers Vim over Emacs and spaces over tabs.

Research Interests/Areas of Focus

Research interests include fundamental training algorithms in machine learning and its applications on intelligent software systems; more recently, this involves deep neural networks both unsupervised and supervised learning over large datasets. Dr. Rivas also studies computer vision and image processing as it is applied to remote sensing and health-related imagery interpretation and visualization.
