Richard Lewis

Professor of Art/Academic Coordinator of Art Programs and Director, MA in Museum Studies, Florence Campus


Professor Lewis joined the Marist faculty in 1984. He has taught a wide range of courses in the Department and was Department Chair from 1995 to 1997 and 2001 to 2010. From 1997 to 2000, he served as Dean of Academic Programs/Asst. Vice President for Academic Affairs. In that role, he was part of the team that established the College's campus in Florence, Italy. Currently, he is the Academic Coordinator for Marist College's programs in Italy and Graduate Director for the MA in Museum Studies in Florence. His teaching focuses on courses in Digital Media, particularly digital painting and animation. In addition, beginning in 2006, he has organized short term abroad courses to Italy, France, Netherlands, England, Greece, Turkey, and Japan and taught in the Departments' Venice Biennale program since its inception in 2009.

Along with his wife Susan, he is the author of "The Power of Art", an art appreciation text published by Cengage, which has been used in more than 350 colleges and universities. The revised third edition was released in January 2018. 

He also co-authored another textbook with his colleague James Luciana, "Digital Media: An Introduction", published by Prentice-Hall in 2005. They are now working on a new introductory text for Digital Media, "Exploring Digital Media," scheduled for publication by Routledge/Focal Press in 2019.
